So far, there have been 14 censuses in Turkey. With the announcement of the Population Services Law No. 5490 in 2006, a new system was put in place, which also shapes the base for the census. Within this system, a “National Address Database” was formed and Turkish Nationals were registered with their identity numbers and foreign nationals with their passport numbers. In this way a transition was made to an “Address Based Population Registration System (ABPRS)". According to the 2007 ABPRS, the total population of Turkey is 70,586,256, including 98,064 foreign nationals.
